Tegbe Advocates for Nigeria-China Aquatic Protocol Implementation

Joseph Tegbe, the Minister of Power, called for the swift implementation of the Nigeria-China Aquatic Products Protocol during a meeting with the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai. Tegbe emphasized that the agreement should lead to increased exports, foreign exchange earnings, and enhanced opportunities for Nigerian businesses.

The protocol, finalized after nearly five years of negotiations, grants eligible Nigerian aquatic products zero-tariff access to China's consumer market of 1.4 billion people. Tegbe noted the significant trade volume between Nigeria and China, which reached $18 billion in the first half of 2026, compared to $28 billion for the entire year of 2025.

Ambassador Yu reaffirmed the Chinese Embassy's commitment to facilitating Nigerian exports and highlighted a 35% rise in bilateral trade and an 80% increase in Nigerian exports in the same period. Dr Vincent Isegbe, Comptroller General of the Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service, also attended and noted the potential for similar market-access deals in other agricultural sectors.
