Nigeria-China Aquatic Products Protocol Implementation Urged

On Tuesday, Joseph Tegbe, the Minister of Power, called for the rapid implementation of the Nigeria-China Aquatic Products Protocol during a reception following its signing by Chinese Ambassador H.E. Yu Dunhai.

The protocol, finalized after nearly five years of negotiations, grants eligible Nigerian aquatic products zero-tariff access to China's market of 1.4 billion consumers. Tegbe emphasized the importance of translating this agreement into increased export volumes and foreign exchange earnings for Nigeria.

He noted that trade between Nigeria and China reached $18 billion in the first half of 2026, with an 80 percent rise in Nigerian exports. Ambassador Yu reaffirmed China's commitment to supporting Nigerian exports and modernizing Nigeria's power system.

Dr. Vincent Isegbe, Comptroller-General of NAQS, pledged compliance support, highlighting the potential for Nigeria's aquatic exports to double.

Stakeholders agreed on the need for swift implementation and measurable outcomes to enhance economic cooperation.
