Nigeria's Telecom Sector Unveils Sustainability Index Proposal

Stakeholders in Nigeria’s telecommunications and technology sectors proposed a National Telecom Sustainability Index to evaluate the industry's environmental, social, and governance performance. This proposal was unveiled at the Telecoms and Technology Sustainability Working Group Stakeholder Strategy Breakfast in Abuja.
The event, themed “Shaping the Future of Sustainable Telecommunications and Technology in Nigeria: A Shared Vision for 2027–2032,” included representatives from the Nigerian Communications Commission, telecom companies, and sustainability professionals. Chris Uwaje, a board member of the TTSWG, outlined the index's five pillars: Environment and Energy; Digital Inclusion and Affordability; Digital Integrity, Privacy and Consumer Trust; Infrastructure Resilience and Governance; and Supply Chain and Local Value Creation.
The metrics will assess various issues, including energy mix, data protection, and local content. Abdu-Waya Mohammed, Chairman of the TTSWG Board, emphasized the strategy's importance in strengthening investor confidence amid the sector's expansion.
