Protests Erupt in Minna Over Deaths of 37 Miners

Protests in Minna, Niger State, were triggered by the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The unrest began on Thursday night and escalated on Friday morning, spreading across various areas including Tunga, Maitumbi, Kpakungu, Bosso, Tudun Natsira, and Berger.

Protesters blocked major roads, including Flamingo Junction, demanding justice. Significant property damage occurred, with vehicles, public property, and campaign materials vandalized.

Security forces, including police and soldiers, were deployed to restore order, using tear gas against demonstrators, with unverified reports of live ammunition being fired. Some youths reportedly sustained injuries during the protests.

The NSTA park was invaded, leading to the vandalism of buses and damage to shops and goods. Nearby banks, GTBank and Access Bank, were also attacked.

Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago was unable to visit the families of the deceased due to the unrest, which has sparked calls for an investigation into the circumstances of the miners' deaths.
