Nigeria's Independence Day Celebration Sees Shift with Abuja Event

The Independence Day celebration in Nigeria has evolved over the years, with a shift in the pattern of events. Since 1960, the ceremony has traditionally included military parades, school children marching, and the president saluting citizens.

However, this year saw a change as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marked the day in Abuja instead of Lagos, where the National Arts Theatre was renamed after Wole Soyinka. The celebration was low-key in Abuja, focusing on private initiatives, while Lagos remained a significant historical venue for the occasion.

This shift marked a departure from the usual festivities, reflecting a new approach to commemorating Nigeria's independence.
