Dangote Refinery Leads to Record Drop in Nigeria's Petrol Imports, Shifts Market Dynamics

Nigeria's petrol imports have dropped to their lowest level in eight years, with a significant decline in September 2025 due to increased local refining capacity, notably from the Dangote Refinery. The country imported 50,000 barrels per day (bpd) of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), the lowest since 2017.

Despite operational setbacks and a strike at the Dangote Refinery, the facility continues to impact the fuel market, prompting a shift towards domestic production. This decrease in imports signifies a shift in Nigeria's fuel market dynamics, with the Dangote Refinery playing a crucial role in reducing the country's reliance on imported petroleum products.
