Nigeria's Ranching Reform: Economic and Security Benefits

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently reaffirmed his administration's commitment to a comprehensive ranching reform during a National Economic Council (NEC) conference in Abuja. He emphasized that reforming Nigeria's livestock sector is not merely an option but a necessity for economic revitalization and national security.

The initiative includes dairy farm investments and ranch development as part of a broader economic transformation agenda. Vice President Kashim Shettima has been tasked with developing a comprehensive roadmap to overhaul Nigeria's livestock industry, with a pilot ranch policy initiated in Kwara State.

The reforms aim to modernize the livestock sector, curb farmer-herder conflicts, and improve productivity. The ranching strategy is expected to enhance meat and dairy production, reduce reliance on imports, and strengthen food security.

Additionally, it will facilitate agro-processing clusters and create job opportunities, addressing youth unemployment and fostering economic interdependence between crop farmers and livestock owners.
