Tinubu Signs Electoral Act 2026 Amendment for Reforms

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the Electoral Act 2026 Amendment Bill, demonstrating his commitment to electoral reform to ensure free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria. This amendment addresses ambiguities and loopholes in the 2022 Act, which raised concerns about the credibility of electoral results.

The act will become operational for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) area council polls, marking a significant step toward the successful conduct of the 2027 general elections. President Tinubu highlighted the importance of national dialogue and cohesion to strengthen democracy, urging the public to renew their trust in the electoral institutions.

He reassured citizens that the electoral process would be managed transparently, with a focus on technological preparedness for real-time results transmission. However, the signing has faced criticism from opposition parties, particularly the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), who expressed concerns over the president's motivations and the potential impact on democracy.
