Nigeria Allocates N135.22bn for Post-Election Litigation

ActionAid Nigeria has condemned the Nigerian government's decision to allocate N135.22 billion for post-election litigation in preparation for the 2027 general elections. This budget is seen as an unprecedented increase compared to previous allocations, such as N2.104 billion in 2022 and N3.087 billion in 2023.

Andrew Mamedu, the Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, criticized this approach as reactive rather than preventive, emphasizing gaps in the Electoral Act 2022, particularly regarding the clarity of electronic transmission of results. The organization argues that the significant allocation reflects a misplaced national priority, urging the government to redirect funds towards strengthening the electoral system and addressing root causes of electoral disputes.

Former INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu noted the high costs incurred by the commission in defending election litigations. ActionAid Nigeria calls for reforms to build public trust in the electoral process and reduce future disputes.
