Yahaya Bello Faces Trial for Corruption in 2026

Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, is facing serious legal challenges as he prepares for trial on March 3, 2026, in Abuja. He is charged with corruption and money laundering, specifically linked to an alleged N110 billion central scheme and an N80 billion money laundering scheme.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought these charges against him, which carry potential prison terms of several years per count under Nigerian law. In December 2024, the Federal Capital Territory High Court granted him bail set at N500 million, with strict conditions including the surrender of his passport and a prohibition on leaving Nigeria without court approval.

Bello previously spent time in EFCC custody and was briefly remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre. The trial will focus on whether certain property documents related to a N100 million Abuja land transaction can be admitted as evidence, with the prosecution arguing they trace financial flows, while the defense claims they are improperly certified and inadmissible.
