Obasanjo and Osoba: A Complex Political Rivalry

The enduring political feud between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba is characterized by competing visions of political leadership and influence within Ogun State and the Yoruba political establishment. Obasanjo, who served as military Head of State from 1976 to 1979 and as civilian President from 1999 to 2007, derived his authority from executive power and national stature.

In contrast, Osoba, a respected investigative journalist, entered politics through the progressive tradition of Chief Obafemi Awolowo and became associated with the Alliance for Democracy and Afenifere. Their rivalry intensified after the return of democracy in 1999, with Obasanjo winning the presidency under the Peoples Democratic Party and Osoba becoming Governor of Ogun State under the Alliance for Democracy.
