Peter Obi Condemns Tear Gas Use Against Protesters

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, issued a statement on Tuesday condemning the recent use of tear gas against peaceful protesters in Nigeria, which he described as indicative of the country's declining democracy. Obi lamented that citizens exercising their constitutional rights were being targeted for simply demanding free, fair, and credible elections.

He criticized those who once claimed to be champions of democracy but have now become its destroyers. Obi called on Nigerians to resist ongoing plans that threaten the nation's democratic institutions and urged citizens to ensure the implementation of mandatory electronic transmission of election results to enhance transparency and public trust in the electoral process.

His comments come amid a widespread debate regarding the recent passage of the Electoral Act amendment bill and ongoing disputes in the National Assembly concerning the mandatory electronic transmission of election results, which civil society organizations have also advocated for in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
