Tinubu Administration Admits Reforms Have Pushed More Nigerians Into Poverty

President Bola Tinubu's administration has publicly acknowledged that its economic reform programme has expanded poverty across Nigeria. Daniel Bwala, the President's Special Adviser on Policy Communication, made the admission during a Wednesday appearance on Channels Television's Politics Today programme, where he addressed mounting criticism of the government's economic direction.
The reforms at the centre of the debate include the removal of the petrol subsidy and the consolidation of the foreign exchange market. These measures triggered significant increases in the cost of goods and services for ordinary Nigerians, with transportation, logistics, and production expenses climbing sharply.
The combined effect has strained household budgets and business operations across the country. Rather than denying the rise in poverty levels, Bwala framed the hardship as an unavoidable consequence of the structural economic changes the administration believes are necessary.
He contended that major economic restructuring cannot occur without creating temporary discomfort for citizens. The adviser also expressed confidence that the administration's performance would improve by the time of the 2027 presidential election, suggesting that the reforms would eventually yield positive results.
The presidency's acknowledgment represents a shift in how the administration publicly discusses the impact of its policies. Previous responses to poverty concerns have focused on long-term benefits, but this statement places the immediate suffering of Nigerians at the centre of the government's defence of its economic choices.
Bwala maintained that progress has been made since the reforms were introduced, though he did not provide specific metrics or timelines for when Nigerians might expect relief.
