Tinubu Proposes Law Amendment for Convicted Offender Transfers

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Nigerian Senate to amend the law governing the transfer of convicted offenders between Nigeria and other countries. This request was made through a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a plenary session.
The letter included the Transfer of Convicted Offenders Enactment and Enforcement Amendment Bill 2026 for Senate consideration. The proposed legislation seeks to amend the Transfer of Convicted Offenders Enactment and Enforcement Act, Cap 216, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
Tinubu stated that the amendment would provide a legal framework for implementing prisoner transfer agreements with countries outside the Commonwealth. Additionally, the bill would empower the president to extend the law's application to any country with which Nigeria has a prisoner transfer agreement, through an order published in the Federal Gazette.
Following the letter's presentation, Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative action.
