INEC's Adeyemi-Showunmi's Role Sparks Political Debate

Isah Magaji Gummi, previously the head of the Electoral Operations Department at INEC, was redeployed to the Voter Registry Department. Adeyemi-Showunmi was moved from her position in the administration department in Lagos to head Electoral Operations.

She is married to Segun Showunmi, a political commentator and former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2019 presidential campaign. During an appearance on Channels Television, Showunmi was questioned about whether his political involvement influenced his wife's redeployment.

He strongly rejected the suggestion, emphasizing her qualifications as a career civil servant and a Level 17 officer at INEC. He highlighted her previous role as Lagos State Administrative Secretary and questioned the implications of her redeployment, referencing Peter Obi's victory in Lagos in 2023.

The redeployment has sparked discussions regarding transparency, political neutrality, and the integrity of INEC as the 2027 general election approaches.
