Tinubu Government Unveils New Gratuity Package for Workers

The Tinubu government has approved a new gratuity package for federal workers during a Federal Executive Council meeting held on Wednesday. This new scheme will provide gratuity payments to retiring federal civil servants, with the amount equivalent to 100% of their total annual emoluments based on a full year’s salary.

The benefits will apply to employees who have served a minimum of 10 years and are contributors to the existing Contributory Pension Scheme, which was introduced 22 years ago. The approval follows recommendations from an inter-ministerial technical committee established by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF).

The committee worked in collaboration with the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) and the Budget Office of the Federal Ministry of Finance. The head of the civil service described this approval as part of broader reforms aimed at enhancing performance and creating a people-centered civil service.

Implementation guidelines are expected to be issued soon, with the new scheme set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
