Nigeria Approves 100% Gratuity for Retiring Civil Servants

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Federal Executive Council, has approved the implementation of a transformative exit benefit scheme that grants retiring federal civil servants a gratuity equal to 100% of their total annual emoluments, effective January 1, 2026. This scheme marks a significant milestone in the government's commitment to strengthening the welfare framework for civil servants and ensuring that those with a minimum of 10 years of service retire with dignity and financial security.

The approval was disclosed in a statement signed by Eno Olotu, the Director of Public Relations in the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation. The decision followed extensive deliberations and technical input from an inter-ministerial technical committee.

Didi Walson Jack, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, commended the Federal Executive Council for this watershed approval, highlighting it as a recognition of the dedication and sacrifices of federal civil servants. The exit benefit scheme is designed to complement the existing contributory pension scheme, providing a substantial financial safety net for retiring officials.
