Tinubu Praises Nigeria's Arbitration Win Against Sunrise Power

On September 17, 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commended an arbitration tribunal for ruling in favor of Nigeria in a case against Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Ltd, which sought $2.35 billion related to the Mambilla hydropower project. The International Chamber of Commerce in Paris dismissed Sunrise's claims, including a demand for $400 million and a declaration of breach of contract by Nigeria.

The tribunal also ordered Sunrise to refund Nigeria's legal fees amounting to $11.8 million. Tinubu acknowledged the efforts of Prince Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and the Federal Ministry of Justice team.

He also expressed gratitude to former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and the late Muhammadu Buhari for their testimonies in the case, which stemmed from a 2003 contract for a 3,050-megawatt hydroelectric plant in Taraba State. Tinubu emphasized Nigeria's commitment to resisting exploitative claims from corrupt entities.
