Tinubu Calls for AU Action Against Xenophobic Attacks

President Bola Tinubu has urged the African Union to take decisive action against the recurring xenophobic attacks in South Africa, particularly those targeting Nigerians. This call was made during the 69th ordinary session of ECOWAS held in Lungi, Sierra Leone.

Tinubu condemned the attacks, labeling them as unacceptable and stressing that African countries must collectively reject violence against their citizens. He highlighted that Nigeria has already evacuated over 4,490 citizens from South Africa in response to these attacks.

The Nigerian government is considering measures to address the treatment of its citizens in South Africa, as indicated by Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu. Additionally, human rights advocate Femi Falana has urged the Nigerian government to seek legal redress at the African Court.

Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to regional integration and cooperation, emphasizing the importance of the newly adopted ECOWAS Compact for future economic growth and stability in West Africa.
