Tinubu Directs NIMC to Enroll All Nigerians by 2026

President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to ensure that every Nigerian is enrolled in the national identity database by the end of 2026. This directive was disclosed by Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, during an appearance on a television program.

The federal government aims to intensify efforts to expand the national identity system, which has already enrolled 137,371,080 Nigerians, marking a significant milestone in the country's identity management program. Coker-Odusote emphasized the government's determination to ensure that no citizen is left unregistered, with a focus on moving beyond urban centers to reach communities directly.

The NIMC is expected to develop strategies for registration processes, especially in remote and underserved areas, to meet the target. Additionally, NIMC has entered partnerships with relevant organizations, including the World Bank, to support the ID4D initiative aimed at strengthening the identity system and improving access to legal identification for citizens.
