Tinubu Signs NIMC Act 2026 to Enhance Digital Identity

On a Friday event at the presidential villa, the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Odusote, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for signing the NIMC Act 2026 into law. This landmark legislation marks a significant moment in Nigeria's history, as it not only amends the existing 2007 NIMC Act but also introduces critical innovations to address the realities of today's digital world.

The 2026 act aims to strengthen Nigeria's digital public infrastructure, enhance trust in digital transactions, and protect citizens' personal data through reinforced cybersecurity measures. It establishes a legal basis for the NIMC to serve as a single root of trust for government transactions, ensuring the issuance of digital certificates that guarantee document integrity.
