Tinubu Orders Resignation of Appointees for 2027 Elections

President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive requiring all political appointees who intend to contest in the forthcoming 2027 general elections to resign from their positions by March 31, 2026. This announcement was made through a statement from the Head of Public Relations on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Devan Nengak Goshit.

The directive is in accordance with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, which outlines the timeline for the issuance of notices by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding party primaries ahead of the elections. The circular, confirmed by the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Dr.

Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, specifies that the resignation requirement applies to various categories of presidential political appointees, including ministers, special advisers, and directors of federal government agencies. President Tinubu emphasized that this measure is essential for ensuring full compliance with electoral laws and promoting a level playing field for all aspirants in the upcoming elections.
