Niger State Orders Political Appointees to Resign by 2026

The Niger State government, under the directive of Secretary to the State Government (SSG) Abubakar Usman, has ordered all political appointees who wish to contest in the 2027 general elections to resign by March 23, 2026. This decision is intended to prevent violations of electoral rules and ensure adherence to the electoral process as outlined by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The presidential and national assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and state house of assembly elections will take place on February 6, 2027. Political parties are expected to commence their primaries on April 23, 2026.

Usman emphasized that the directive is aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral laws, which require public office holders to resign at least one month before their party primaries if they intend to contest for electoral positions.
