Tinubu Photos on Niger Bridge Spark Political Row in Anambra

Minister of Works Dave Umahi has ordered that photographs of President Bola Tinubu be placed on the First Niger Bridge once rehabilitation concludes. During a Wednesday inspection of maintenance activities on the 1.404-kilometre crossing, Umahi announced this decision as a way to acknowledge federal efforts in restoring the structure.

Anambra State officials have objected to the directive, contending that developmental priorities should take precedence. Opposition has also come from Reuben Abati, a former presidential aide, who raised fairness concerns.

Abati argued that because taxpayer money supported the bridge's rehabilitation, all political candidates deserve equal visibility rather than the sitting president alone enjoying such prominence. The All Progressives Grand Alliance has voiced backing for Umahi's plan, noting that displaying presidential imagery on completed federal projects represents customary procedure nationwide.

This stance differs markedly from positions held by the state government, revealing divisions among groups normally unified on regional issues. Thursday brought fresh comments from Umahi rejecting pressure to accelerate the opening timeline, claiming the administration held advantageous leverage over project scheduling.

The decoration matter thus remains unresolved. His earlier remarks specified that unlawful signage must first be stripped away before new images could be affixed to the bridge.
