Okonkwo Critiques Tinubu's Subsidy Removal Impact

Kenneth Okonkwo, the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar's 2027 presidential campaign representing the African Democratic Congress (ADC), criticized President Bola Tinubu's removal of the petrol subsidy, stating it has exacerbated economic hardship and diminished the naira's value. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Okonkwo highlighted that petrol prices have surged to approximately ₦1,300 per litre, making it unaffordable for many Nigerians.

He noted that a motorist with a 100-litre tank would need around ₦130,000 to fill it, which is nearly double the minimum wage. Okonkwo clarified that Atiku's proposal does not involve returning to the previous subsidy regime but aims to provide crude oil to local refineries at lower costs to reduce petrol prices.

He also criticized Tinubu's economic policies, asserting that the naira has lost significant value despite an increase in the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000. Okonkwo emphasized that the purchasing power of Nigerians has not improved under Tinubu's administration.
