Tottenham Appoints Roberto De Zerbi Amid Fan Backlash

Tottenham Hotspur has officially appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach on a five-year contract, effective immediately. This decision comes as the club attempts to stabilize a turbulent season, currently sitting just one point above the relegation zone with seven matches remaining in the Premier League.

The appointment has drawn significant criticism, leading the Tottenham Hotspur Support Trust to hold an emergency board meeting to express their concerns to the club. The group communicated their dissatisfaction to BBC Sport, highlighting complaints regarding the decision.

Additionally, Ali Speechli, co-founder of the Women of White Hart Lane group, announced she would cease attending matches in protest. The backlash is partly fueled by De Zerbi's public support for Mason Greenwood, a forward who left Manchester United following serious allegations of rape and physical assault.

De Zerbi has insisted that his support for Greenwood was misconstrued and has faced criticism since Greenwood's arrest in 2022.
