Cross River Governor Otu Cuts Transport Fines and Tickets

On March 9, 2026, Governor Senator Bassey Edet Otu of Cross River State will implement a series of transport reforms aimed at alleviating the financial burden on commercial drivers. This decision follows protests from drivers in Calabar regarding the rising costs of transport tickets and excessive fines imposed by enforcement teams.

The governor has ordered a reduction in daily ticket prices for commercial bus operators from ₦850 to ₦500 and a 50% reduction in traffic-related fines. Additionally, ticket prices for tricycle operators will decrease from ₦1,200 to ₦500, although operations for tricycles will be restricted to before 6 PM.

The governor emphasized that all payments related to transport fines will be made to a designated state government account to ensure transparency. The TRAMRA, led by Director General Alfr Effiong, will resume its statutory duties, focusing on traffic management and promoting safe driving practices, while ensuring compliance with traffic laws.
