President Donald Trump's administration has put a freeze on immigrant visa appointments across US embassies and consulates worldwide, representing another adjustment to immigration policy. In early August, the State Department announced this worldwide pause and attributed it to necessary training for consular personnel on updated screening methods.

Among those impacted by this suspension are Nigerian applicants pursuing legal immigration pathways. State Department officials explained that the training initiative aims to provide visa officers with improved techniques for evaluating whether applicants might become dependent on American public services.

To carry out the training rollout, the department must postpone existing visa interview slots. However, no specific date was given regarding when regular visa appointment scheduling would resume, leaving many applicants uncertain about future scheduling.

Separately, though aligned with broader policy goals, the Trump administration intends to cancel the temporary visas held by roughly 200,000 individuals who initially entered on business or tourist status then subsequently applied for asylum. Working alongside the Department of Homeland Security, the State Department will identify and terminate these visas, describing the effort as addressing what it views as deceptive practices designed to circumvent lawful immigration procedures.

Together, these actions constitute a heightening of immigration enforcement mechanisms. The revocation campaign focuses on those whom officials claim misled authorities about their intentions—claiming temporary residence while actually seeking permanent settlement via asylum filings.
