U.S. Halts Immigrant Visa Applications Amid Trump Crackdown

The United States has paused all immigrant visa applications worldwide as the Trump administration seeks to tighten restrictions on applicants deemed likely to rely on U.S. public assistance. A State Department official confirmed this pause on Tuesday, stating that the initiative was launched at all U.S. embassies and consulates in early August.

Visa appointments were adjusted for “in-depth training” of consular officers to ensure comprehensive evaluations of applicants. Those with scheduled interviews received emails notifying them of cancellations and future rescheduling.

The move is part of a broader immigration crackdown, which includes plans to revoke visas of asylum seekers who entered the U.S. as tourists or business visitors. State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott described obtaining a visa for asylum under these circumstances as “fraud,” which justifies revocation.

The White House indicated that up to 200,000 visas could be affected, marking a significant mass visa revocation. Immigration advocates expressed concerns over the immediate obstacles this pause creates for applicants.
