Akpabio Defends INEC Chairman Against Partisanship Claims

On Tuesday, during the inauguration of the corporate headquarters of the National Revenue Service in Abuja, Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President, defended Joash Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), against allegations of partisanship stemming from a controversial tweet. Akpabio dismissed claims that the tweet suggested political alignment, asserting that the INEC chairman's statements were neutral.

He noted that the tweet, which resurfaced online, dated back to a time when individuals were assuming office and was manipulated to misrepresent the chairman's position. Akpabio clarified that the INEC chairman does not engage in partisan political commentary and emphasized the importance of public office holders remaining impartial.

The allegations were linked to a post by Dayo Israel, the APC national youth leader, which claimed a victory in certain polling units. INEC has repeatedly described these claims as false and part of a misinformation campaign, stating that they are investigating the authenticity of the tweet and the account from which it originated.
