Diphtheria Outbreak Claims Two Lives in Abuja

Two individuals have died due to a diphtheria outbreak in Abuja, as confirmed by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, the Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environmental Secretariat, reported that the fatalities were part of five confirmed cases following laboratory tests.

The FCTA has activated a multidisciplinary Incident Management Team to address the outbreak, which has been reported in various communities. During an advocacy campaign at the Emir of Karshi’s Palace, Fasawe disclosed that 10 of 15 suspected cases were negative, while 15 additional suspected cases are under investigation.

Diphtheria, caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae, presents symptoms like fever and sore throat, which can escalate to severe respiratory issues. Fasawe urged immediate medical attention for symptomatic individuals and highlighted ongoing efforts to trace contacts, provide preventive antibiotics, and enhance vaccination coverage, particularly for under-immunized children.
