UDUS Advocates for Research Investment to Address Health Issues

Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bashiru Garba, has advocated for increased investment in research, innovation, and collaboration to address Africa's escalating health and environmental challenges. This call was made during the CAMRET-OHI Joint International Conference held at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital on Thursday.

The conference, organized by the Centre for Advanced Medical Research and Training (CAMRET) and the One Health Institute (OHI), focused on the theme “Harnessing Research, Innovation, and Partnership for One Health Solutions to Emerging Health and Environmental Challenges in Africa.” Prof. Garba highlighted the interconnected nature of issues such as infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and climate change, stressing the importance of a One Health approach. He noted CAMRET's achievements, including research on vaccine candidates for Lassa fever and COVID-19, and the establishment of a COVID-19 screening center.

He also mentioned the introduction of a Master of One Health program at OHI, the first of its kind in Africa.
