Afe Adogame Advocates for Interdisciplinary Research in Nigeria

Afe Adogame, a Professor of Religion and Society at Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey, called for Nigerian universities to deepen interdisciplinary research to address the country's security challenges. He made this statement on Monday at the 2026 African Universities Seminar Series Nigeria (AUSS-NG) conference, hosted by the Institute for African and Diaspora Studies at the University of Lagos.

In his keynote titled "Holy Violence, Unholy Embrace: The Intersection of Religious Conflict and Insecurity," Adogame emphasized that the complexity of Nigeria's insecurity cannot be explained through a single academic discipline. He urged researchers to explore political, economic, religious, social, historical, and structural dimensions of conflicts.

Adogame highlighted the importance of examining specific case studies and local contexts, stating that context matters in understanding conflicts. Cyril Obi, Director of the African Peacebuilding and Developmental Dynamics Programme at the Social Science Research Council, discussed a proposed national entity to strengthen scholarly collaboration focused on peace and security.
