Bruno Fernandes extended the lead shortly before halftime after a combination with Youri Tielemans. Benjamin Sesko scored his first goal of the season by rounding the goalkeeper, Stas Pokatilov, and Lisandro Martinez completed the scoring after Pokatilov's error left him with an open net.

This victory was particularly significant for United, who had only garnered four points from their first three Premier League matches. Manager Michael Carrick opted to rest key players, including Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, and Marcus Rashford, ahead of the Manchester derby against Manchester City.
