UK-Based Nigerian Doctor Jailed for NHS Fraud Scheme

Richard Akinrolabu, a Nigerian doctor based in the UK, has been sentenced to three years in prison by the Woolwich Crown Court for defrauding the NHS of £268,000. Akinrolabu pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud for falsely representing his employment status while working at Princess Royal University Hospital and King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Despite being unfit for work, he continued to work night shifts at multiple hospitals, including Basildon Hospital and Princess Alexandra Hospital. The case was brought forward by the NHS Counter Fraud Authority, with Judge David Miller emphasizing the breach of trust and professional standards.

Ben Harrison, head of operations at the NHS Counter Fraud Authority, highlighted the deliberate abuse of trust and funds by Akinrolabu.
