UK Court Acquits Former Petroleum Minister Diezani of All Bribery Charges

A London jury has cleared Nigeria's ex-petroleum minister Diezani Alison-Madueke of six bribery counts after a decade-long investigation by British authorities.

Diezani Alison-Madueke, who served as Nigeria's first female Minister of Petroleum Resources between 2010 and 2015 during President Goodluck Jonathan's administration, has been found not guilty on all six bribery counts by a London jury. The jurors' decision came after 46 hours of deliberation, concluding a trial that started in January of this year.

The prosecution's case centered on allegations that the 65-year-old received cash, private jet travel, luxury items such as goods from Louis Vuitton and Harrods, and other valuable perquisites from figures in the oil sector who sought business arrangements with Nigeria's government. Alison-Madueke's legal team argued these were cultural gifts and purchases made in an official capacity.

She has characterized the verdict as vindicating her standing and reputation. Approximately a decade ago, Britain's National Crime Agency launched an investigation into her conduct, establishing this as a noteworthy high-profile corruption case against a former Nigerian energy sector official tried in UK courts.

During her career, she also held a prominent role with the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries. Yet the London verdict does not settle all outstanding legal challenges confronting her.

Laolu Akande, spokesperson during an earlier Nigerian presidency, has called on Alison-Madueke to come back to Nigeria and address separate allegations before the country's courts. Within Nigeria, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission maintains its own cases, including court-ordered seizures of assets connected to her period in office.
