UK Sanctions Target Trafficking of Nigerians to Russia

On Wednesday, the UK government announced a new sanctions offensive targeting 35 individuals and entities connected to a trafficking network that recruits foreign nationals, including Nigerians, for military service in Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. The sanctions aim to dismantle a pipeline that exploits vulnerable migrants with false promises of jobs and education, ultimately deploying them to the frontlines under harsh conditions.

British officials, including Stephen Doughty, described the network as predatory and integral to sustaining Russia's military efforts. The sanctions also extend to suppliers in China and Thailand accused of providing components for drone manufacturing, highlighting the global nature of the conflict's economy.

Gill Lever, the British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja, confirmed that Nigerians are directly affected by these schemes, which exploit economic vulnerabilities. The UK’s measures are part of a broader strategy to combat human trafficking and irregular migration linked to the war, marking the first such framework aimed at addressing these issues.
