UK Sanctions Networks Exploiting Nigerians for Russia

On Wednesday, the UK government announced fresh sanctions targeting networks accused of exploiting vulnerable Nigerians to support Russia's war in Ukraine. This measure is part of a broader crackdown on human trafficking and illicit supply chains sustaining Russia's military campaign.

A total of 35 individuals and entities were sanctioned, including those allegedly involved in recruiting and funneling migrants for frontline combat roles and drone production. Among those named is Polina Alexandrovna Azarnykh, accused of facilitating the movement of recruits from several countries, including Nigeria, to fight in Ukraine under dire conditions.

UK Foreign Minister Stephen Doughty condemned these practices, stating they exploit vulnerable people to support Russia's illegal war. The sanctions aim to disrupt operations that turn migrants into "cannon fodder" for Russia's military efforts.

The UK continues to lead international efforts to apply economic pressure on the Kremlin while supporting Ukraine's defense.
