UK Mission Refunds Nigerians £50 on Overcharged Passport Fees

The Nigerian High Commission in London has directed that individuals who paid £70 in administrative fees during the passport intervention exercise will be refunded £50. According to the mission, £20 represents the sole authorized charge for this service, meaning those paying the higher amount experienced an overcharge of £50.

This directive came after applicants lodged complaints regarding the inflated fees. The High Commission underscored that no authorization from the Federal Government supported the £70 figure and restated the legitimate administrative cost as refunds were prepared for affected applicants.

Launched on September 7, 2026, the special passport intervention exercise has been prolonged through October 3 to accommodate high volumes. Throughout its opening six operational days, the Nigeria Immigration Service processed 2,296 applicants split between two United Kingdom locations.

At the Manchester Centre, 1,709 individuals completed enrolments; the London Centre registered 587, as confirmed by the NIS Public Relations Officer. Throughout the opening week, daily enrolment counts stayed relatively consistent as applicants attended their assigned appointments at each location.

The extended timeline acknowledges the substantial number of Nigerians using this designated opportunity to secure new passports or renew existing ones, with services available across the Manchester and London Centres.
