UK Radio Station Breaches Rules Announcing King's Death

In May, Radio Caroline, a community radio station in the UK, mistakenly announced the death of King Charles III, leading to a breach of broadcasting rules as identified by Ofcom. The station aired messages stating, “We have suspended our normal programmes until further notice as a mark of respect following the passing of His Majesty King Charles III,” followed by the national anthem and 16 minutes of silence.

Ofcom received two complaints regarding the broadcast, citing a “very significant inaccuracy” and the “considerable length of time” taken to acknowledge the error, which violated rules requiring news reports to be accurate and significant mistakes to be promptly corrected on air. The error occurred when a staff member accessed pre-recorded sound files related to the monarch’s death during maintenance, inadvertently broadcasting them.

The presenter, unaware of the off-air status, did not respond to calls until 30 minutes later. Radio Caroline stated the staff member involved had been reprimanded, and the pre-recorded files have since been removed from the studio computer.
