UN Urges Ceasefire as Sudan Crisis Intensifies

The United Nations, represented by Human Rights Chief Volker Türk, has called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan amid escalating violence. Türk highlighted the imminent risk to civilians in various regions and urged an end to foreign involvement in the conflict, advocating for a return to civilian governance.

Since the conflict's onset, more than six million people have been displaced within Sudan, and an additional 4.5 million have sought refuge in other countries. UN investigators reported that both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces are increasingly utilizing long-range drones, which have facilitated attacks beyond traditional front lines.

Notably, drone strikes in South Kordofan targeted a kindergarten and a hospital, resulting in 114 fatalities, including 60 children, while another attack on a teaching hospital claimed at least 70 lives. The investigators indicated reasonable grounds to believe that both factions have committed serious violations potentially amounting to war crimes.

The UN continues to urge the warring parties to protect civilians and respect international humanitarian law.
