UN Commemorates Fourth Anniversary of Ukraine Invasion

On Tuesday, the United Nations commemorated the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine with a high-level debate at its headquarters in New York. The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution titled "Support for Lasting Peace in Ukraine," which calls for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

The resolution, which reaffirmed the assembly's commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, was passed with 107 votes in favor, including Nigeria, while 12 voted against and 51 abstained. UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated that the invasion violates the UN Charter and international law, leading to devastating consequences and a threat to regional and international peace and security.

He emphasized that the ongoing war has resulted in an increasing number of civilian casualties, which is unacceptable. Guterres reiterated the call for an immediate ceasefire as a crucial first step toward achieving a just and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.
