Nigeria Hosts 109,000 Asylum Seekers and Refugees from 41 Countries

Nigeria is currently hosting over 109,000 asylum seekers and refugees from at least 41 countries, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The UNHCR's strategy report for 2023-2025 highlights Nigeria's role in redefining national policies and regional engagement following the 2023 election of President Bola Tinubu.

The report emphasizes Nigeria's responsibility as a country of origin, transit, and destination for asylum seekers and refugees, particularly from the Lake Chad Basin region. Despite facing challenges like poverty and inflation, Nigeria continues to support refugees, returnees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and those affected by conflicts, armed groups, communal violence, and climate shocks.

The partnership between Nigeria and the UNHCR is crucial for addressing forced displacement and promoting regional security.
