UN Warns of Sophisticated Terrorism Tactics in Nigeria

The United Nations has issued a warning regarding the evolving tactics of terrorist groups operating in northern Nigeria and the broader West African Sahel region. In a report presented to the UN Security Council, Leonardo Simão, the head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), detailed how these groups are deploying drones and utilizing advanced communication technologies, including cryptocurrency, to strengthen their operations.

The report covers developments from November 29, 2025, to June 30, 2026, and notes that the humanitarian situation is deteriorating, with approximately 6.8 million people displaced and 1.28 million becoming refugees or asylum seekers. The report also highlights a significant seizure of terrorist equipment in Nigeria, including electronic devices and aircraft, and notes that the Nigerian forces have killed 199 jihadists in a single raid.

The UN emphasizes the need for international cooperation to address the underlying causes of violent extremism and the intersection of terrorism with organized crime.
