UN Warns of 45 Million More Facing Acute Hunger Crisis

The United Nations has issued a warning that if the ongoing conflict in the Middle East continues, an additional 45 million people could face acute hunger, contributing to a global total of 319 million people experiencing severe food insecurity, which is a historic high. Carl Skau, the Deputy Executive Director of the UN's World Food Programme (WFP), stated this alarming projection during a press conference in Geneva.

The conflict, which has entered its third week, has already resulted in significant casualties and has disrupted supply chains, leading to soaring operational costs for the WFP. The agency is grappling with a "perfect storm" of challenges, including extreme weather events and resource shortages, which have forced it to streamline operations and cut staff.

The situation is exacerbated by rising fuel prices and the ongoing war, which has made it increasingly difficult for the WFP to deliver aid effectively.
