UN Women Advocates for SGBV Law Awareness in Nigeria

UN Women, represented by Beatrice Eyong, called for increased awareness of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) legislation in Nigeria during a press conference in Abuja. This initiative coincides with Olubumi Uluba's planned 220-hour Guinness World Record attempt to read aloud SGBV laws and frameworks from 15 African countries, including Nigeria.

Eyong stated that empowering citizens and holding authorities accountable requires widespread knowledge of these laws. She noted that many individuals are unaware of their legal rights, which hampers their ability to seek justice.

The initiative aims to raise public awareness, encourage stronger implementation, and facilitate cross-country learning in combating violence. Eyong also highlighted that SGBV is not solely a women's issue, as men and boys can also be victims.

Dr. Abiodun Eseyat mentioned that the government would utilize the campaign to enhance community engagement and support for survivors, while also working to strengthen Sexual Assault Referral Centres and expedite gender-related legislation.
