UNAIDS Applauds US for $5.88bn Funding Boost to Global HIV Response

The United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has commended the United States for approving a $5.88 billion funding boost to strengthen the global HIV response. The bipartisan spending law, signed by US President Donald Trump on February 3, 2026, allocates $4.6 billion for bilateral HIV programs and $1.25 billion to support the Global Fund's fight against AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.

Additionally, $45 million will directly support UNAIDS. UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima described the investment as critical to sustaining life-saving HIV services globally.

The funding aims to help millions of people in partner countries and ensure an effective, evidence-based, and result-oriented global HIV response. The US investment aligns with the America First Global Health Strategy, prioritizing progress towards the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets to combat HIV/AIDS by 2030.

The US has been a key player in the global HIV response for two decades, contributing to millions of lives saved and supporting countries in building stronger, self-reliant HIV programs. The new funding will provide data, technical expertise, and strategic support to affected communities, working closely with partners like the Global Fund and UNAIDS.
