Nigerian Health Sector Faces Challenges as NAFDAC Enforces Ban on Sale of Small Alcohol Sachets

The Nigerian health sector is grappling with challenges following reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) recommending increased taxation on alcohol and sugar-sweetened beverages to reduce harmful effects. In response, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has enforced a ban on the sale of alcohol in small sachets and bottles below 200ml starting January 2026.

This move, led by NAFDAC Director General Professor Mojisola Christianah Adeyey, aims to protect children, adolescents, and young adults from the negative impacts of alcohol consumption, such as addiction, domestic violence, and road accidents. The ban aligns with Nigeria's commitment to global health strategies to mitigate the harmful effects of alcohol.

However, there are concerns about compliance with the ban, as some manufacturers have been accused of disobeying NAFDAC's directives, leading to potential conflicts with government regulations.
