UNIBEN Lecturers Extend Strike Over Salary Dispute

Lecturers at the University of Benin, Edo State, under the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have decided to extend their indefinite strike due to the alleged non-payment of their full salaries for August 2026. This decision was made on Friday after the university management reportedly failed to provide clear details regarding the payment status.

A communique signed by the ASUU branch Chairman Enaruna Edosa and Secretary Lucky Aimiyekagbon stated that while part of the outstanding salaries had been paid, the university administration could not clarify the amounts paid, the outstanding balance, or the timeline for settling the remaining payments. The strike commenced on Wednesday after lecturers received only half of their salaries for August.

The university's Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehannire, denied the allegations, asserting that the Federal Government had paid all staff salaries up to August 2026. Despite this, ASUU members resolved to continue their strike until they receive full payment and detailed information regarding their salaries.
