UNIZIK Denies Salary Claims Amid ASUU Strike Action

The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) has addressed claims from its lecturers, represented by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), regarding the payment of their August 2026 salaries. UNIZIK spokesperson Aloysius Attah stated that all lecturers received their full salaries, and the only outstanding payment is the Earned Academic Allowance.

Attah explained that the university is facing challenges in meeting these allowance payments due to a decline in its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). He noted that UNIZIK spends at least N500 million monthly to cover the allowance, which has become difficult to sustain.

The university had previously reached an agreement with ASUU's national leadership on the payment of the allowance, but individual universities were later directed to fund these payments from their IGR, with a promise of reimbursement. The ASUU chapter at UNIZIK announced an indefinite strike on August 26, 2026, citing incomplete salary payments as the reason for their action.
